Myopia Management Germantown, Rockville, Gaithersburg
There are a number of factors that contribute to the onset of myopia, or nearsightedness. Genetics are a huge factor, as well as diet, frequent exposure to artificial lighting, and work that requires the use of near vision such as reading books and frequent computer use. While two people may have similar symptoms, there isn’t a “one-size-fits-all” treatment to help control the progression of myopia. There are multiple treatments associated with myopia control including orthokeratology (Ortho-K), multi-focal contact lenses, multi-focal eyeglass lenses, and atropine eye drops. If you or your child has been diagnosed with nearsighted vision, it’s important to seek myopia control treatment, as it can help reduce the likelihood of developing more serious complications in adulthood, such as glaucoma, cataracts, retinal detachment, and in some cases, blindness.
Here at Germantown Vision Care, our highly trained staff is equipped with the latest technology to provide you the highest level of care and skilled technique. Regardless of your age or family history, we are happy to help you find the best myopia control treatment to fit your individual needs.
While the treatment you receive here in our office can make a world of difference in your vision and quality of life, your myopia control treatment does not have to end when you walk out of our office. There are many steps you can take to reduce your risk of developing high myopia by changing aspects of your lifestyle. Regardless of your age, these steps can be beneficial to the success of your myopia control treatment:
Limit your screen time and prolonged reading. While we all love our electronic devices and reading, the up close and personal attention they require can be detrimental to your eye health. By limiting screen time and reading for prolonged periods of time, you can give your near vision a break. Spend some more time outside. The great outdoors can do you a lot of good when it comes to your eye health. Whether you are simply sitting on the porch or taking a stroll through your neighborhood, reducing your exposure to artificial light is important in helping prevent further progression of myopia.
Check your diet. Eating minimally processed and whole foods is also helpful to reduce nearsighted progression in conjunction with your myopia control treatment. Just as importantly, get plenty of rest. Going to bed at a decent hour is always a healthy choice, but it can be extra helpful in conjunction with your myopia control treatment.
